Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to develop a Java based virtual reality development platform that supports state-of-the-art telecom technologies for the data interface and Firewire (IEEE-1394) or USB 2.0 technologies for the interface to your computer.  The VRMAD device is
not a general purpose computer but rather a high performance peripheral that off-loads compute intensive tasks from your computer. The objective is to provide the user with a very responsive 3D world that includes a rich multimedia experience. Our intention is to create a Virtual World environment, not a video gaming system!

The system will be powered by a high speed Java engine, dedicated DSP chips, and parallel 3D engines for graphics rendering. It is our hope that the hardware can be developed in a public forum under an "open" license that will allow designers to innovate. The platform architecture should scale to allow for both personal and commercial applications. Open-source Java APIs will be made available to stimulate software development activity for the platform. Users will be free to develop additional APIs that can be offered to the public for a fee.

Some people believe that the next generation of the Internet will bring you video on demand, interactive TV, and video conferencing. We believe that the future holds much more promise! If you are interested in learning more about the
